Beyond the Bell Fast Facts

1. Beyond the Bell is an academic based before and after school program that currently operates in 26 Sioux City, Iowa and South Sioux City, Nebraska schools. Beyond the Bell also operates a 6 week summer program.

2. Beyond the Bell programming has four core components: Academic Enrichment, Youth Development, Nutrition and Recreation.

3. In 2007-2008 Beyond the Bell served 1619 students during the school year and 691 students during the Summer 2008 program.

4. 2007-08 school year by ethnic breakdown:

  •     53% White

  •     22% Hispanic

  •     9% African American

  •     6% Native American

  •     2% Asian

  •     8 % Multi-racial

5. Beyond the Bell serves children in grades Pre-K through 8th grade at its current locations

6. Approximately 70 teachers will teach more than 6,000 hours after school during the 2008-2009 school year.

7. Program evaluation has shown that participation in Beyond the Bell has helped a number of children improve their grades, complete homework, and be more faithful in regular school attendance.

8. It costs approximately 1.2 million dollars to fully fund the program for one academic year and one six week summer program.

9. Beyond the Bell is funded through grants, United Way dollars, and program fees.

10. No child is turned away due to inability to pay and Beyond the Bell offers a sliding scale fee system for children who receive free/reduced lunch.

11. Beyond the Bell also accepts DHS day care assistance dollars from qualifying families.
